And I collapsed without knowing if the kids, those who’d managed to save themselves, would end up leading decent lives or would become the same old villains, condemned by the ignorance of their forebears to perish in the ruins of their history. I collapsed without knowing if individual decisions can make a difference but with the certainty that the impulses of the human heart are the only defense we have against the unnerving sound of the trumpets of the apocalypse.

this was okay... felt a bit like a saramago-inspired postapocalyptic piece with a barely cohesive story line. i found it difficult to connect with any character but i powered through to see where the book was going, nothing to write home about...
