whilst there was much to love, i was left feeling a bit eh from some of the stories. the first had me completely hooked, but ended up plateuing out. it's very show don't tell in the way she feeds you each story, but i do think i will read her other work. the imagery was outstanding, moments of light gore that managed to make me feel yuck and i loved it.

i do love simone de Beauvoir's non fiction work, but this fell a bit flat for me. i think it was just a bit too character driven for my liking, it didn't follow any plot line that held the story firmly, hence had this feeling that it was going nowhere. her writing style is always commendable though, always worth reading her other works, and i def think i’ll try revisiting this in 5-10 years when i’ve grown up a bit more lol

”i was not the woman who breaks into pieces under the blows of abandonment and absence, who goes mad, who dies. only a few fragments had splintered off, for the rest i was well. i was whole, whole would remain. to those who hurt me, i react giving back in kind. i am the queen of spades, i am the wasp that stings, i am the dark serpent. i am the invulnerable animal who passes through fire and is not burned.”
so jaw-dropping, i cannot even begin to explain how incredible this book is. she feels so real, and alive within her thoughts of a nature that seemed akin to that of medea, i was mesmerised from the first sentence. cannot wait to read for of elena ferrante, this is truly an incredible book, i only wish it was longer. this is the perfect novel that tackles women vs the void, the feminine rage and it’s innate entanglement with sex is captured so effortlessly, im in awe everytime i reflect upon it.

i’m obsessed with the way she writes. it truly feels like i am just reading the thoughts of a girl who doesn’t understand. this book is really great, so so so clever. however, whilst i think it's not a bad book, her poetry is much more full and possesses this brilliance that this novel seems to fall short of reaching.

this is my favourite book of all time without a doubt. everything about baldwin's storytelling is engrossing. every reread i am left speechless and sobbing. the way he is able to hold the suspense in the most perfect way before dropping it so tragically is just.... stunning. the way he expresses every characters own self reflection with the people in their lives seems effortlessly perfect. it's so incredible, how he manages to grip at your heart with this almost hemingway esque style of writing and twist it as if you are living alongside these men. jaw dropping. i love this book with every ounce of my soul and every bone in my body.
"if you cannot love me, i will die. before you came i wanted to die, i have told you many times. it is cruel to have made me want to live only to make my death more bloody.”
