19 Varieties of Gazelle: Poems of the Middle East by Naomi Shihab Nye
No rating yet. I'm torn about this collection. Some of these poems are beautiful, descriptive, and full of yearning, memory. There are examples and acknowledgement of the horrors Israel has committed against Palestinians. And I'm not certain if this being written in the 90s-00s and me reading it in 2024 leads to my uncertain feelings here. Nye tends towards the "Arab-Americans 'deplore the unbelievable, senseless sorrow caused by people from the Middle East'" viewpoint without having enough space or time to explore why violence is sometimes the only option when non-violent protests have not been able to stop colonial violence against the oppressed. Resistance is justified when people are under brutal occupation.
This view is shown at the beginning of the collection and although not as obvious as the collection went on, my experience was coloured by that initial context.

Art is lovely and I didn't realize it's based on a true story.
