i love megan’s books which is probably why i’m rating this higher than i should but here goes! between this book and book 2, the fractured world, i felt like the horror aspect was taken away. the blighted stars focused so much on this thing and the horrors of this thing and the idea that people have literally been killed or faked deaths in a society where it’s very hard hard to do so! to fight this thing and keep it a secret. i felt horrified and scared at the implications of what could happen when the main group would finally fight back. but book 2 felt like a bunch of different side quests which…okay i guess?? the main plot was still there but the romance took up more of the story than the sci-fi part?? (not that i’m complaining i loved tarquin and naira, i love their banter but i am also in fact a sucker for a romance so…). and then this book it felt like that threat was almost nonexistent?? and the plot took a complete 180, dealing with elements that weren’t even really though of until this book, it felt like they just appeared out of nowhere?? i honestly wish we had stayed focused on the camus and stayed with the horror/sci-fi stuff, i think it would’ve made a better plot than the jonsun/time traveling naira.

i may have left a review for the atlas complex but i think i have a similar overall critique that while megan (and olivie) do write wonderful characters, the plot could use some work. and it sucks even more for megan because i know she writes good plots! i really liked the protectorate and yeah that also had an evolving plot but it had been evolving since book 1 (tbh i really don’t know what happened to all the camus infected on the sigillaria, is acaelus still controlling it??)

i also wish we had seen more of kav and kuma, megan’s strength is in writing these core groups and it sucks that they were gone for such big chunks of books.

overall, i did like this book…i think? i had a good feeling reading the end, i enjoyed the relationships and how problems were solved i just wish we stayed on the canus track.
