I listened to the audiobook and, while the focus of the vignettes was more on the founding fathers than I liked for a book supposed to be about women, I found Cokie Roberts' voice oddly comforting.
The only other Atwood I'd read before this was Handmaid's Tale, which I thought of as a children's book because I read my little cousin's copy on Christmas vacation. This was... not that.
Cat's Eye is a book about a life, but the kind of story that ignores the joys of life in favor of shadows and scars. The story is about a woman who is very much "not like other women," but the story still manages to give other women humanity and fullness. It is both a criticism of girls' friendships and a criticism of other criticisms thereof.
I don't recommend it if you're already feeling depressed.
