Flawless: Lessons in Looks and Culture from the K-Beauty Capital by Elise Hu

With more and more filters, fillers, and procedures how far will unrealistic pressures of patriarchal beauty standards go and what does it say about us as humans? Flawless by Elise Hu is a great read. First 80 pages or so are more history of Kpop culture and an American Journalist (former model) navigation of the culture. Would be great for a book club, lots to discuss and learn but flows and written very well.

Okay I love retellings of fairy tales and this one is good. Little horror, little romance, woman stabbing men it's good. It would be a 5 but after the happily-ever-after they had one chapter about the system of government they put it and I get why that would be good but civic lessons are not the best way to end a book. But you should read it. We can talk.

Solid middle school read. It is like WALL-E combined with the Giver. I didn't really get a good grasp on the shrimp people and the hierarchy of the collective but it was a fun a read.

Okay I loved this book until the very end. No the ending is fine for both timelines. And you should read it as I love the past story but the present day chapters near the end bothered me. So I thought a lot about what I didn't like as it is well written, engaging, great characters, love the setting. And maybe like 10 pages of the book were problematic for me. So <<<<<<<<<<<<<SPOILERS,......,.....,...I don't like how there was ANOTHER reason to dump the wanker of a husband. He was already horrible and I felt like she was finally listening to what works for her and what she wants and that should be enough to dump him. >>>>>>>And then it got overly self-helpy and telling me what morals I should take from the book. I can figure that out for myself thank you very much.

"Sadly, songs don't last forever. When they suddenly come to an end, the cruelty of the world returns and we have to continue without the music." I liked this book. I randomly picked it up at a booksale based on the cover. The first chapter was intense and I almost stopped reading it but I am glad I didn't. I liked that it was of a woman's point of view and she was talking to her partner. It felt personal and real. The killers loved ones is a point of view I often think about but rarely see.

Good non complicated book on a complicated and layered problem of belonging to society while also having a body.  Made me think about diet culture, race, and being a women in a different lens. Validating, challenging, and showing ideas.

What the fuck did I just read and did I like it? Um yes, I think I did. This book is the wildest book I think I've read. It is chaotic and all over the place and strange but it works. It gets five stars because it is stuck in my head. It stands out. It was a fast, easy read. It does have multiple perspectives but I enjoy that. I am perfectly at peace with the ending but could see people not liking it. Is there a WTF genre, if not Lucy A Snyder just invented one.
