Did I miss something? Lots of people have raved about this book and I thought the idea behind it was pretty cool. But I truly just could not stomach it. I was listening to the audio book and I think that maybe the narration contributed to my dislike of this book. I only made it 1.5 hrs in before I just could not listen to another minute.
The prose has been described as beautiful but I just found it a bit confusing and a lot overdone. At first read/listen you think wow, this is gorgeous and descriptive writing that I could get lost in. But then you actually listen to the words and you find yourself thinking, "I don't get it." It's one thing to throw a metaphor or two into your book. It's another to throw one in every sentence and none of them actually make sense.
And the strike-throughs. I kept hearing this awful noise on the audio and thought something was wrong with my copy. I finally looked it up and found that several (way too many) sentences are strike-throughs in the book. Imagine how distracting and annoying it is to hear that constantly interrupting the narration. The dramatization is just way, way over the top. I just couldn't handle it and found it more eye roll inducing than anything.
To be brutally honest this just came off as a very twisted, pathetic teenage girl fantasy to me and a really bad one at that. (Juliette has to share a room with *gasp* a boy!!- Ugh. Cue eye roll.)
The good news is that this is one series I won't feel compelled to finish. I know several people say that the end redeemed the book for them but I'm just not going to make it that far.
