I loved this second book in the Benny Imura series. All of the characters really grow up and become less of annoying know it all teens. Maberry has this really great ability to make his book about more than just killing zombies. There are moments when the zombies really take a back seat to the issues going on personally with the characters. That gives this book a lot more depth. The final scene in Dust and Decay is like Woah! Shit gets real people. The book came to a close with a bang and leaves me really anxious to see where Benny and his friends will find themselves next.
This is not the first Chief Inspector Gamache book I've read but it's by far my favorite. A Trick of the Light digs more deeply into Gamache and his teams lives and relationships with each other. Yes, the book is about a murder that must be solved, but it's more than that and that's what made me really enjoy this one. You get kind of attached to these characters and Penny only throws a little bit about them into each book. But this time, she did way more than that. We really get to see more of their story behind their work as detectives and it's good- real good. Lillian Dyson's murder is true to Penny's style. You think you've solved it only you know you haven't. You know that Gamache will reveal the clever twist at the end and once again, it will seem so obvious, yet you never saw it. A Trick of the Light has made me want to continue with this series even though cozy mysteries series can sometimes go on forever and ever. This one is worth keeping up with.
Wow. Just wow. I am completely blown away by this story and even more so because it's based on a true story. The title and synopsis explain that this is a tale of WWII survival. Um, I should say so! Let's just say I wouldn't have lasted past day 1 on this journey. I don't want to give anything away but I will say that you don't have to love history to love this book. Yes, it takes place during WWII, but it's a personal tale weaved in through the events of those years. It will take you to the edge and back. It will make you question humanity and the human spirit. It will make you laugh, it will make you cry and it will make you angry. It may be premature to say this but I'm pretty sure this will be on my top five best books of 2014 list, if not the best book of 2014. It was published in 2010 but I've only just stumbled upon it now. I listened to the audio which was so great that I'd pull into my driveway and stay in the car for another twenty minute just to keep listening. An incredible story with just so much heart.
I sped through this book. It was such a great read. Pretty sure this will be a talked about book when it comes out. All middle graders and families in general can find something in this book for them. Ellie figures out that she may have a passion after all and in the process manages to help strengthen more ties than just her own to her family.
