Maniac Magee, born Jeffrey Lionel Magee, quickly becomes a legend in racially divided Two Mills, Pennsylvania. After running in and out of both the East end and the West end, he manages to astound everyone who comes in contact with him. There doesn’t seem to be anything that Maniac can’t do when he puts his mind to it. He runs rails at full pace, catches wayward football passes while holding a book in the other hand, and fearlessly faces bullies. There’s no question that Maniac really is ‘crazy.’ But is he? Perhaps he’s just a regular kid, looking for a place to fit in. He doesn’t seem to see the racial prejudices that plague the community and his interactions with both sides, gradually begin to open the eyes of others. A touching story of acceptance and love, Maniac Magee reminds us that there is good and bad on both ends of the racial spectrum. Through his travels, Maniac discovers that the most important thing is to love people for who they are and that family and home can be found wherever your running shoes can take you.
This was a really fun audio book to listen to. I'm never very good at figuring out mysteries. My husband can almost always tell who did it after only the first 100 pages or so. I had fun coming up with my own theories as I listened. One by one the ten guests on the private island are picked off and murdered. Who was the murderer and who would be next? I guess that this book could be very predictable to some people. It is, in a way, but not in the way that ruins a good story. Also, not a suspenseful book, but it did keep me guessing. In the end, I was wrong on my guess of who the killer was! Now I want to read more Agatha Christie- never really got in to her before.
I picked up this cozy mystery series because it looked like a fun one. It was. The thing about cozies is that they're a quick, easy, and satisfying read for me. So while this is a mystery involving ghosts, it's not frightening in the least. The mystery is also not difficult to figure out on your own. But that never stops me from reading them. The characters in cozies are typically very colorful and full of personality. Night of the Living Deed is not the best cozy mystery I've ever read but it's a series I could invest a little time in. It kept me interested and entertained. As a side note, although I own this in paperback, I find cozies much more fun to listen to on audio.
