I loved the mermaids, the world building, the pirates, the magic system, the pirate ships and travel of adventure.

BUT

I did not care for the protagonist Amora..I dunno if it was the character development feeling forced or rushed I dunno exactly what it was but I just didn't care much for her. Now the side character Bastian hell yes I want more LOL.

I got extremely bored with the second half of the book, i was so confused on why the fleeing maybe I missed something I dunno but I just wish there was more to the plot and a different element to the protagonist.

But the world building alone was what kept me going because I wanted to learn more about the environment than caring about the main character *grimace face* the dark magic or evil magic was interesting but I want more of that lol. and why on most YA fantasies is there a love/romance thing going on or maybe I interpreted that incorrectly and it really wasn't a love/romancey thing going on...I want the epic journey, the world building, the incredible magic system. I am still going to read the second in this series and I will definitely re-read this one because I had to of missed something while listening on audio book.

The narrator was good which helped me along the book. Overall I'd say 3 maybe 3.5 stars but definitely not a 4.

It's been a hot minute that I've read through an entire book but I'm so glad it was with this beautiful story. I felt like I was on an adventure while turning page after page. Even with the limited amount of time I had to read it was a quick read. Chapters though they were short I enjoyed the different transitions. Overall I would recommend this book but I caution on trigger warnings related to suicide, drug abuse, and depression.

Wow what a ride this one was. This one had me just as emotional as the four winds. This is such a beautiful story and really loved this one. If there were more stars available i would grant more. Kristin Hannah is one heck of a story teller and overall an amazing historical fiction writer. Everything that I pick up from her from the four winds to this to even the great alone is just perfection. such amazing characters and character building throughout and overall a nail gripper asking for more about the characters and world she builds.

2021 has been the year for myself on expanding my reading and trying new genres out. I'm a typical scifi/fantasy reader but I have been diving into historical fiction and other genres. This historical fiction based in the dust bowl era was incredible. As a single mother myself I was rooting for her the whole way through as a mothers love conquers all. I normally don't cry with books but this one wrecked me. I haven't read anything of Kristin Hannah's and I'm glad my book club selected this one.

Such a good book. I felt so many emotions for many of the characters and her journey for the MC. I am fascinated by this era and loved this perspective
