2.5

pretty good, entertaining. cringey at parts especially the beginning and the end, but it didn’t totally spoil it

edit 13/05 - 2.5 stars: been thinking about this book since I finished it and in hindsight I feel like there was a fair bit that didn’t hit for me. I think the issue with cramming so much of Evelyn’s life into 400 pages or so meant that a lot of it was telling and not showing.
I felt like this book lacked life, I felt like Evelyn wasn’t a strong character and she kept being described with the same exact vocabulary: big boobs, ruthless and ambitious etc. I get that this book sort of got famous as like a gay icon sort of thing, and look im the last person who’s going to defend men but really it did seem a bit crass when it came to developing straight male characters. but again its probably a factor of just cramming too much into the book and never having the time to properly explore anyone. also like something about making the title about her husbands and making them the focal point of the novel felt a bit icky as well, though i can see the counter arguments here so im not dying on this hill.
also Monique was so annoying, also had very little character, and her reaction to Evelyn telling her the truth about her father felt really staged. like idk her whole i hAtE yOu eVelYn but also I love you ahhhh thing felt like a silly kid having a tantrum and she’s like 35y/o.
yeah. I get why this book is so hyped up i really do. I read it in like 2 days and i was enjoying myself seriously. I just think it was very fluffy and lacked depth.
