4 ⭐️ - spoilers below!
The first few chapters were slow to get through but as soon as the Kejari began, I was hooked. I loved Oraya’s attitude and seeing the world through her eyes, and found the descriptions vivid and easy to imagine. The writing was beautiful - found myself highlighting a lot of quotes because of this!
Until the last part of the book, I also adored Raihn (the way he missed the sunlight so much and refused to give up his humanity

Thank you to NetGalley and Hodder & Stoughton for this arc!
The writing in this book was beautiful and I loved the start of the book so much. The worldbuilding & descriptions were vivid and creative, and I would happily read several more books set in this world. For the first and last thirds of the book, the plot was very engaging, but it felt slow in the middle - the story could have been more enjoyable if some of this had been cut out. I enjoyed the way it flitted between characters, but despite being one of the main characters, Violet felt a little underdeveloped. I also would have loved to find out a bit more about Marianne by the end.
Overall an enjoyable read, which I would recommend for people who enjoyed Addie LaRue, His Dark Materials & Starling House - I look forward to reading more of Georgia Summers’ work in future as I really loved her writing style ❤️

4 ⭐️ - I was so unimpressed by the first few chapters but I couldn’t put it down once the chess started. loved the characters as well as the family dynamic, and it had the perfect mix of chess playing, romance and life drama.
things that stopped it from being 5 stars:
- could have been more realistic
- I felt like it could have spent some time discussing real female chess players, since real male players are referenced so often: was v disappointed by this considering one of the themes of the book!

4 ⭐️ - like gossip girl with more focus on the characters’ struggles. loved lily and lo’s closeness and the way that neither of their addictions were brushed under the rug or miraculously resolved. connor & ryke were grating at first but quickly became my faves as they showed up again and again for both lo & lily.
a book I was hooked on from the first page. will be devouring this series

3.5 ⭐️ - loved seeing Lily & Ryke bonding & her working on her issues but there wasn’t enough Lo in this one

4.5 ⭐️ - the most beautiful writing I’ve read in a long time. this book was eerie, haunting and strangely comforting, and felt like a mix of the haunting of hill house and alice in wonderland.

4 ⭐️ - “She is my past, my present, my future. So when I open the door and slide into the driver’s seat, I’m not surprised that it feels like I’m returning home.” ❤️
- loved Lo & Lily growing together despite their setbacks and Lo & Ryke becoming closer
- the ending of the book was beautiful
- unsure how I feel about what’s happened with Daisy so far but we’ll see how it goes
- the glimpses of Rose & Connor were everything; so keen to read their story!
