โ This is a hard story to read or listen to and is not for the faint of heart. We know people are poor the same way we know the sky is blue. But to have it laid out like this is something totally different. โ
โ
I had no idea who Ms. Pat was until I got into the book and her story is unbelievable. Her mother was an alcoholic and by the age of 16 she was a single mom of 2. With a middle school education, her options were limited but she learned that a sharp tongue and hustling would be her means of survival. โ
โ
I went though all feelings with this book. It's laugh out loud funny, upsetting, heartbreaking but also inspiring. โ

The Secret Women by Sheila Williams

The Secret Women is about the relationship between mothers and daughters. โ Elise Armstrong, Carmen Bradshaw, and DeeDee Davis meet in a yoga class and become fast friends bonding over their lingering grief of their late mothers. The trio make a pact to help each other sort through their mother belongings. As they sort through old letters and diaries each woman learns of their mothers deepest secrets, which send shockwaves rippling through their own lives. The Secret Women is a beautiful story about family, friendship and the unconditional love between mother and daughter. โ

I saw so many posts about this book when it was published back in June and decided I just had to give it a read! I loved the premise of the story: three accomplished women who have become stuck in their lives after losing their mothers, banding together to help each other through the pain and grief. But of course it ends up being so much more than that. They discover things about their mothers they never knew which reshapes their understanding of who their mothers wereโ

While I've started to read more YA recently, Adult/Mature fiction has a special place in my heart. If you like family drama, adult fiction I'm sure you'll enjoy this one. โ

While this is fiction, there are many aspects of this story that are real or mimic reality so well it's frightening. I'm not just talking about the discrimination on gender identity and sexual orientation but the way in which religious freedoms are valued and preserved above human safety and well-being. The startlingly accurate reflection of today's world is what makes this book unforgettable. โ

"In this day and age, people believe whatever fits with their world view, no matter how strong the evidence against it is" โ
โ
"We live in a society where the wrongdoers immediately shift the conversation: blaming the victim, lying, de-legitimizing those who are outraged, so the crime becomes condemning the crime, not committing the crime." โ
โ
If you haven't yet, give it a read, you'll be delighted you did
