I really adored this novel. There was so much tenderness, so much thoughtful engagement with immigration, identity, belonging, community... The author didn't only use her own experiences but did a great deal of research into portraying the Chinese-English characters in the historical context accurately and sensitively. Our h was so compelling, with her lists and her drive and her take-no-BS-attitude, and our H was kind and thoughtful and yes, funny and hot too. I can't wait to read more stories about this amazing town.

So I rarely write reviews for the romance novels I read, but this time I just had to give my opinion. I'm sure some people would enjoy this novel, but it irked me on so many levels. The main conflict is uninteresting, much too lengthy, and provides basically no drama or tension worthy of a romance novel. The sexual chemistry between the h and H is lacking, especially compared to the other relationship we see. I understand that the intent of the novel is to show that shared interests and goals are important, and I thought that was lovely, if a bit dryily done for the most part. The H does have some great moments of respect for the h, but consent and respect doesn't have to be boring to read. Also, the narration from both their perspectives kept maligning an interest in politics, which yeah, was part of the characters' personalities, but just made them less likable for me. Overall, this just clearly was not for me.
