Realising I Hate Murder Mysteries By Slagging Off Agatha Christie

I truly did struggle to find any redeeming qualities about this book. I went into it completely crossing fingers toes and any other intertwinable limb I own that I would enjoy it. I desperately wanted to be one of those people who read Agatha Christie on the tube. but alas, this was absolute rubbish and I detested every minute I spent reading this. the reason I gave it two stars and not one was that I did enjoy the plot twist, but trust me I had to work to get there.

I struggled with this book, and I struggled hard guys. I also spent hours reading other peoples' 5 star reviews of this book and wondering where I went so wrong reading this since everybody else bloody loved it. I've come to the conclusion that I might just be too anxious to read murder mysteries. I cared so much that I was exhausted by chapter two and emotionally gave up with even trying to suss it out.

The characters only exist to serve the plot, not the other way around, and there's absolutely no development to be found no matter how hard I looked. Typically I really enjoy the feeling you get in books where the things the characters say or do is only after a long internal procedure of regulating and processing their own emotions, and then acting accordingly. This book gave me the exact opposite. This book gave me surface level drama with absolutely nothing bouncing around in any of the characters' noggins. What they think is what they say. And while this might feel immediately rewarding, in the long run it felt defeatist and gave me the impression that I had wasted hours of my life reading this book to ultimately accomplish nothing.

Agatha Christie doesn't go deeply into anyone's characterisation, not even the main one. And ultimately I got what I was told I was being served, I'm just disappointed there was truly nothing more than what was on the surface. Don't read this if you're expecting to be blown away by some underlying plot or psychological thriller aspect, Miss Agatha promised us a mystery puzzle and she gave exactly that and nothing more.
