Really nice cozy fantasy, with good character. The pacing is quite fast but it's alright

Bad writing + character are either annoying or deeply unlikeable + not my vibe

First DC event that I read so I might not be subjective at all (because I have nothing to compare it to).

I read not just the Legions issue but also most of the tie-ins and this is a theme I like in comics (when the public stops trusting heroes and starts going against them) so I was glad to discover it with DC. In general, it is pretty nice and enjoyable :)

Also made me discover a lot of characters so a win is a win!

"I spoke the truth, and the world didn't end."

When I saw the cover for the first time, it felt like a warm hug. With soft colours and a gorgeous design, I wanted to crawl inside of it. And that is part of why I requested this one from Netgalley. That, and when I read the summary, I knew deep down that this book had a lot of potential. And you know what? I was right.

This book was truly amazing, it felt like a hug, one with tears on the cheek, it felt like learning to let go but also learning to let new things in. This is a debut novel about grief, and I believe that the author managed to deal with her subject incredibly well. Multiple characters are dealing with grief here, all in their own ways and, without feeling too heavy, it felt right. Reading this book felt right, as if I was learning to let go as well as Saika, our main character. During the book, she often addressed her dead sister, Fi, who she is grieving and for whom she went to Ash Gardens. She addressed her in the second person, and it gave a particular type of writing that fit well, it helped me to get inside the book, but it also made sense and went very well with the thematics. We could feel her pain and grief even better that way, I liked it a lot.

This book is a cosy fantasy, and I would like to thank the author for making me realize that I like those a lot. After turning the last page, I just wanted to crawl back inside and stay curled up in a corner of the universe. Ash Garden is, simply, such a lovely place with such wonderful characters. My favourites were probably Oli and Hilde, but the truth is that I loved them all, in one way or another. This book was filled with magic and love, and it was absolutely beautiful. I loved the fantasy aspect of the book and how the magic worked. I am also utterly fan of the concept of the arboretum, it is beautiful.

Last but not least, the relationships in this book!! Between the soft and small sapphic romance and the incredible found family that made my heart warm. Globally, this is a perfect read if you want a cosy book that will make you feel things with a nice cast and a touch of magic. Thanks to Netgalley and Ezeekat Press for sending me an ARC, the book will be out on October 15th and I deeply recommend it!

Bad ink: how the New York Times sold out transgender teens - Riki Wilchins

“I believe we need a New York Times. I just don't believe we need this New York Times”
4☆|5

As I read the last words written by Riki Wilchins in this book, I finally let tears out of my eyes. Tears of frustration and anger, mostly. I finally finished navigating this intimidating book, and it was certainly a heavy read, which usually comes with such heavy subjects. This is truly a well-done and fantastic book. It takes hundreds of pages to debunk transphobic misinformation shared by the NYT since the newspaper saw a change of publisher in 2015.

Indeed, since then and for the last 10 years, the Times has dedicated dozens of articles, attacking transgenders teenagers and kids on all plans. Medical transitions, “increase” of the number of trans people, social transition, … Everything. This book can be a really heavy reading because we can read and see all that hate and transphobia. But we can also see the author brilliantly debunking it, point by point. Adding additional study results that were not covered by the Times - we all wonder why - explaining exactly how the Times shifted its treatment of transgender people.

This book is brilliant, and I do believe that it's a necessary reading - if only to counter the argument that the right wing is being “stupid” because they are not, they know exactly what they are doing, and the Times knew as well when it started listening to them and giving them the floor - but I wouldn't recommend it to everyone. Because even if it debunks the transphobia, it is still there. It took me multiple weeks to read it because I often needed breaks from it because I couldn't deal with it anymore. So please take care and make sure that it's okay with you before reading it. But it is truly an interesting book.

Thanks to Netgalley and Riverdale Avenue Books for sending me an eARC for this book!

I am kinda disappointed because I was expecting something a bit closer to a retelling because this wasn’t quite enough close to it for me. But I really liked the relationship between Luca, Celestina and Icarus, that was nice.

Also the chapters were so short I hated that.
