this would've been a very solid 3 stars if not for the fact that, for some reason, mo xi's character deeply resonated with me. not a lot happens but boy does it make you want to gaze out at the horizon.

wowzer!! i absolutely fell in love with the prose and the atmosphere in this, and i wish we could've kept the slow paced, more family focused storytelling to the end.
to all the men in this book, i have only one thing to say: GET A JOB, STAY AWAY FROM HER

yan wushi in love, yan wushi in love, yan wushi in love. important things need to be said three times.
to be completely honest, this might be my least favourite volume. book 2 and 3 held my favourite scenes, and probably the most impotant developments for both the plot and the characters. initially, i gave the first volume 3 stars because not a lot happened, and because i knew what story was waiting ahead. in this sense, this book should also get 3 stars. but yan wushi's in love. and i love to see him suffer.also, shen qiao fighting hulugu, yippeeee my favourite scene from this book

after a long look in the mirror, i decided that this is the day when i stop being a hater. i made quite a few notes about the aspects of this book that i found weak and lacking, but the prose and the general "good time" i had while reading softened my heart. i liked isobel and rook, i liked the take on fairies, i liked the idea of craft... and again, the prose carried. i really enjoyed it

it's not everyday that a book can leave such a bad taste in my mouth... but in a kind of good way? i didn't think the story would get under my skin like this. idk. i need time.
