I almost loved this book because I thought it was going to explore how deep domestic abuse goes, especially when rendered invisible by its perpetrators. Not only do I feel like the author did not know how to close this out in a way that is satisfying but took it into places that left me asking....why the heck are we here right now?

♡Contains Spoilers♡

Pros: Annie is making rational decisions the entire time in my opinion. She is being manipulated by Doug, her human owner, the corporation, the technicians and the world. Her confusion in every situation and her slow climb to rage between processing her abuse in combination with the contradictions of it all cause her to lapse between her wants and her programming.

People really can be this horrible. While I raged with Annie or even for her when she couldn't, I don't doubt that this speculative fiction may not be entirely wrong in the way everyone monopolized on her situation.

This could have been so much darker and I wanted more female rage

CONS: HERE IS A BIG ONE (not a spoiler because it's said in the first 10 pages before bekng repeated later on)
.....
This story had a subtext of pushing a conservative agenda that did not sit right with me. I will go into more details on my video review, but the biggest being that Annie feels she was saved since her organic material was taken from "embryos that were abandoned by their parents". This is harmful rhetoric that is supported later by painting people who are in  Annie's corner as more conservative. The woman who's embryo was held in the health center has scince passed away and Doug has a birth certificate made for Annie citing this woman as Annie's biological mother (no consent?) ,  making Annie grateful to him for this key to her freedom because now she is truly human....  HUH!? Additionally our villain openly labeling themselves as liberal, despite him demonstrating extreme conservative values of a good woman, home maker, intimacy expectations, even speaking in specific ways when in the presence of the head of house. WHY SIERRA GEER??? WHY DID YOU EVEN OPEN THIS DOOR???

The ending was unsatisfactory. Doug Comes to a redemption that is not uncovered despite having the motivation to become worse. He has some kind of come to jesus moment and he is painted as also a victim??????????? After all his SA and psychological abuse?

So many loose ends are left unkempt. The consequences of the contracts with the company or with his ex wife ( Who he expressed fetish over her being black might i add!!!) Never resurface. Delta is not fully utilized. Nothing. I'm done. Never again.
