5: HOLY COW! Give me more, more, more!
I am BFFs with these characters, read the book super quickly, I was pulled in and connected with a realistic feel of the story, and there was a lot of aloud responses to this story which may/may not include: crying, laughing, sighing, yelling, etc.
My Teaser: Dorian Gray, a young well-to-do man, falls in love with his looks after being immortalized in a painting executed by his worshiper. He wishes he could never grow old but instead the painting would suffer. Be careful what you wish for, because physical beauty mars the soul.
Nahs:
• There was some drawn out parts in the middle and here and there, but I think I would have understood these parts better if I had more knowledge of the time period.
Aahs:
• The quotes. So many highlights. The depth mixed with the satirical hilarity was so enjoyable.
• Many parts went over my head but I look forward to reading it again in the future!
• The character development.
• The surprises.
• The banter!
Theme: Beauty is fleeting and can ruin someone. Don’t sell your soul in pursuit of outward beauty.
Style: There is much dialogue in this book. Some chapters have little to no dialogue. There is a great balance between the two.
Details or Gaps?: This book is not terribly long; however, I would say there is perfect amounts of details to satisfy the reader and to piece together the theme and characters.
Literary Devices: The mood of the book seems unique to me. It’s supposed to be proper, languidly beautiful. The characters are all charming and seem to possess an unrealistic quality at times. I think Wilde is trying to stress the difference between romancing tragedies and taking them for what they are: real, raw, and violent. It really hits hard the idea of selfishness and lack of empathy of others for pursuit of self-preservation. This is such a hard topic to create a story about but this one is done very well.
Uniqueness Scale:
4 - New and refreshing!
Recommend?: Yes! To anyone. It’s not a long read and the theme can be understood by everyone.

The beauty in death. The message is beautiful: cherish the here and now because no one knows much time you have left.
Such an inspiration short novel that also teaches you to be open and loving to all people no matter what your assumptions or prejudices may be. Even when life isn't fair, learn to enjoy the moments and laughs you do have with those around you.
