The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson

The haunting of hill house is one of my favourite shows. it is so well thought out and literally blew my mind. Which is why i decided to read the book. Tbh, im a little disappointed, i feel like i would rate this lower if it weren’t for how much i love the series. Without the show (i can’t believe i’m saying this), this book wouldn’t be special. I feel like the book needs the show to make it better but not vice versa.
Anyways, im not horribly disappointed, this could’ve been so much worse. It was just a little underwhelming.

oooooooo the SUSPENSE!
honestly, i was close to dnf-ing this at times because it was soooo slow paced but i stuck around for the ending and i'm glad I did.
i had so many theories in my head about who could've possibly done the killings and so I wasn't totally shocked about Diondra and Patty but the rest? I would've never guessed. And I like that because it still gave the book some shock and mystery.
What are the chances though, 2 killers in one night?
Some key points I liked:
- full circle moment when Libby is hiding in the woods, running away from her killer
- how Libby wanted to die for most of the book until she was actually gonna die and was like "sike nvm"

giving us a glimpse of the lives of 3 women over the course of one night is a good concept but the execution was a little boring :/ i needed more

my brother wanted me to read this so badly. it was actually enjoyable, although i picked it up at the worst possible time, the day before my bestfriend passed away. so i didn't read for this whole month and only decided to continue it yesterday and I got through it pretty quickly. its fucking weird though how this is the book I picked up and its literally about the main character's childhood bestfriend dying.
there was nothing necessarily wrong with this book, it was pretty fast paced, with some slow moments but it was just a little underwhelming for me. maybe because my brother kept telling me I would be shocked by the ending. but it honestly didn't surprise me. its just about a stalker, right?
i don't know but I like that this story focuses a lot on how one moment, action or decision can change your life forever. its something i've been thinking a lot about recently.
Anyways, this was probably the worst month of my life and i'm sad i didn't push myself to read much this month because it is extremely therapeutic. but i'm look forward to picking it up again, i feel my escapism coming back out.

As much as I believed I wasn't enjoying this while reading it, in the end, it made me smile. I realized that i was very intrigued even if at times, there were some aspects or parts of the novel that I didn't enjoy as much as others. i think what made me enjoy this book was its message and overall creativity. What are we without history? What are we without the earth? Nothing.
This was my first novel by this author. From the moment I saw this book, I knew I wanted to read it, it sounded so interesting. Its not what i expected but i do not regret reading it. It taught me things and reminded me of what we came from. Oh, how I wish we lived in a world without power, corruption and money.
it was super interesting, i'm not sure if i'd recommend it to everyone but it was definitely a unique read and I say read whatever you feel a pull towards. i really liked the characters, the story and the overall message. the writing captured my attention right away, it was really beautifully written. what i really didn't like though was the structure. it made the book harder to read and to follow which is why i'm not sure if i'd recommend reading it.

i usually do my reviews right after i finish reading a book to get my thoughts out, but i fully had to read a few reddit posts before even getting my thoughts together because i was so fucking confused. it started off slow and was hard to get into but i was so intrigued and the premise sounded good as well. It got really good when things started getting pretty intense and then it kinda flopped again towards the end. i love twisted media like this but i hate when it tries so hard to be an analogy to the point where you are confused but not in a good way. you're just sitting there like "what the hell am i watching" or "what am i reading right now".
i know i sound like i hate this book, but i really don't. it was right up my alley and the writing was so good but i had to think way too hard to read this book. when I read books like these, i want to close the page and be like "holy shit what the hell" and go into deep dives on reddit about it. I did go on reddit, but for a different reason.
I kind of want to re read this? but i also don't. its rare for me to rr so i feel like its not worth wasting my time over but i also know everything about the book now which will allow me to read it with a better understanding and to hopefully rate it higher. im convinced this is a book you have to read twice to be amazed (which should't be the case but ill allow it for this one, we'll see). i just really liked the unreliable narration and can find a deeper appreciation for it by reading it again... but do i really want to?
that was a fun little entry, idk why i sounded very angry in this one but im just so confused on what i feel towards this
also, this was super gay, right?
edit: i take back what i said, if these reddit theories are real then this book was amazing and complex
