The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix

The men in this book.... Ohh, I hate them so much. There was a lot I liked about this read, but the things I disliked really overshadowed them. Absolutely an uncomfortable read (As horror should be), and all horror elements did what it was supposed to do. If you want to read this book to be scared, disgusted, uncomfortable, freaked out, I say go for it. That's where Hendrix's writing really shines. However, I wasn't the biggest fan of the ending, and the misogyny and weird racist undertones didn't necessarily work for me in this setting; where normally these topics feel like they're teaching a lesson, here they didn't feel expanded upon enough, making it feel pointless.

hmm. i could tell the writing style wasn't for me. after reading some reviews it seems this isn't the high-action, crime filled, page turner the description says it is. a bit too slow for me

A beautifully written, deeply descriptive, obviously passionate literary fantasy loved by R.F Kuang... But I did not like it. This was so overwhelming boring. I tried forcing myself to like it, with the hopes that it would get better, or that something would click and I would ultimately fall in love with this book like I did with Babel but this was just too slow for my liking. I thought it would be more mythical and whimsical, given the cover, and how people have been talking about this book, but ultimately not for me.
I may give this another chance later on in the year, however.

This book has so much potential. It's a fairly easy read, very emotional and moving, but would benefit greatly with some polished editing.
