New favorite book. Absolutely brilliant and moving in the way things you take for granted often have the ability to be. A tribute to the power of stories and the hope of preserving/appreciating what really matters in life. If you liked Piranesi (which actually wasn’t my favorite haha) or books like the Otherland series (which I also think are just okay after the first), I do think you’d like this as it has a very imaginative element, creative storytelling, with what feels like more captivating plot lines and characters.

I feel absolutely wrecked after reading this. You can tell Jeannette and her dad love each other sooo much, and just seeing the glimpses of his love for her in the midst of all this family’s wandering and struggles with alcoholism and poverty really resonated with me. While you shake your head at the level of neglect and irresponsibility towards these children, you also find yourself envious of the real freedom and unattachment the parents have to almost everything. A beautiful, vulnerable memoir that highlights the conflicting emotions that can come from loving your dysfunctional family. :’)

I really enjoyed reading this! I felt like it was imaginative and fun as far as fiction books go. Great spunky main character, great sidekick, great villain, and great plot line with an air of mystery! Didn’t love her other book The Night Ship (got close to finishing but couldn’t) but this one’s worth checking out!

I think I loved Otherland I so much because it was so imaginative and novel, so then when it didn’t really have closure…and then just kept going in this book…and then THIS book didn’t have closure, I just got bored!
