why was this so short? it was perfection, but i need more. more sapphic novellas, more masked lesbians, more stepsisters romances.

what in god's name was this? if the first book was unhinged, there aren't even words to describe this one. it bordered on camp at times. a sacrilegious and blasphemous nun romance. i did love the chapter titles and desecration of religion, tainting catholic rituals as a metaphor for the love of a psychopath. not taking anything away from the entertainment this provide, the story lost itself at times in favor of shock value and plot twists. and once again, the ending left a lot to be desired.

what did i just read? i might actually need therapy for this one, no pun intended. but ironically, i left my last therapist because i had a crush on her, so this keeps getting better and better. it's too meta how much this book read me, but i digress. it was dark dark, like completely unhinged, yet it still felt like something was lacking. the pace was slightly off and the ending abrupt. no groveling, no real resolution. but i also don't know what i was expecting, it's not like the story demanded anything different, if that makes sense. it was almost as if a longer novella, albeit still rush. did i enjoy myself nevertheless? absolutely. just don't take it seriously.

this was nothing like i expected from what little was known about kol in the previous book i gathered this would be a second chance romance, but their backstory was surreal to me. who would have imagined, boy obsessed with revenge kol was actually just a betrayed boy obsessed who actually felt deeply? his demons were haunting. the way the authors weaved this into a retelling of rapunzel was actually mind blowing. in my opinion, that element was better in this book than in the first. every minute detail spoke to the bigger picture and by the time i connected all the dots i was around. furthermore, the darkness in this book was very reminiscent of mafia academy, and not only that but the little easter eggs and cameos came for my heart, making me miss it even more.

* i was sent an arc by the authors in exchange for a honest review

“take off your own mask. show me everything that’s underneath.”

i don't know what fascinates me more, the criminal x detective relationship or the psychiatrist x criminal one. but this book combined the two to near perfection, weaving the tension and power dynamic between the main leads into a deliciously dark web of blood and lust. i didn’t know i needed a dr. jekyll and mr. hyde reimagining, but this gave me all the psychological mindfuck goodness. i love an unreliable narrator.
