The High Mountain Court by A.K. Mulford

this book really surprised me. i went into this with low expectations since i had never heard of it or the author before other than the recommendation i was given for it, but mulford created such a rich and enticing world. the twists of this book while catering to tropes still managed to surprise me, and i really love the mc. the male lover interest was a bit generic (dark haired fae prince), but i didn’t mind that. it takes a lot for a book to make me cry, but the climax of this book really got me for once, and that is my main reason for giving five stars.

i enjoyed this one just as much as the first. once again i was cackling at the witty jane austen references and ridiculous poshness of the characters. also loved seeing the protagonists of the first book making cameos in this one. i did think that the witch hunter was going to be a bigger part of the plot and was a bit disappointed when it just felt like a throwaway subplot. accusations of witchcraft, even in this era, could be detrimental to women and holton really could have done some interesting things with that.

the end of dorian gray was honestly the only accepting ending after a story like this.

wow. really enjoyed the change in POVs for this book and seeing the other side of the plot from the previous book. my only complaint is that the beats were so fast that i stopped being shocked at what was supposed to be surprising deaths. very much gave game of thrones vibes with the ruthless politics, but that not necessarily a bad thing. just doesn’t leave as much of an impact after awhile.

really enjoyed the tropical setting of this series. jenson’s political navigation of this high fantasy world was extremely impressive. could use more explicit POC & LGBTQ+ rep. all of the characters other than laura were described pretty vaguely.

“be with me always – take any form – drive me mad! only do not leave me in this abyss, where i cannot find you!” — brontë

every almost all of these characters are miserable, i couldn’t possible contrive how this story could have a happy ending for any of them. but damn did emily brontë know how to craft complete chaos and wickedness and still be able to tie up the loose ends in the very last pages of the novel.
