Marginally redeemed by the second story, I found the translation clunky at times with some choice decisions made, the use of a trans woman (here nothing more than a clownfish) and her ever predictable death as a plot device is sympathetic but confused and tired, and Yoshimoto's motif of the divine feminine is incomplete. The New York times describes it as making 'the trite essential' but all over it is mostly trite.
