This book was such a fun read! Vera Wong is an absolute treasure—her meddling, bold personality had me hooked from the start. While it took me a little while to get into the story, by the halfway point, I couldn’t put it down. The twists kept me guessing, and even though I had my suspicions about the killer, the “how” and “why” totally surprised me.
What I loved most was how the story weaves different cultures into the mystery—it added so much depth and heart. The mix of humor, intrigue, and heartfelt moments made this a truly enjoyable read. I can’t wait to read the other one.

If delusional were a person, it would be Juniper. Kuang created a character who is equal parts infuriating and fascinating. As much as I couldn’t stand Juniper—her entitlement, her moral gymnastics, and her pursuit of fame—I couldn’t stop reading. Every page left me wondering: how far would she go to protect her ill-gotten success?
The story delves deep into questions of cultural appropriation, privilege, and the lengths people will go to achieve literary fame. Juniper’s choices are maddening, yet realistic. There were so many moments where she could have stopped, where she could have chosen to do the right thing, but her ambition wouldn’t let her. That tension—between wanting her to face the consequences of her actions and being curious about how far she’d take things—kept me reading

This is the first Freida book that I have rated this low. The ending left me with so many questions. I did love the plot twists that Frieda is known for but the ending just….

This is one of those books that I would recommend everyone read. The way that Jodi explored racism and justice was phenomenal. I also had a discussion guide to accompany my reading, which made the book that much better. This book will make you think about perspectives you never thought of. Absolutely a must-read. I’m not going to lie, I was a little skeptical about a book on racism being written by a white woman, but she did this subject so much justice. If you look at the author’s note, she explains a lot about the research she did to write this beautiful novel.

Such a good book. It was one of those books I couldn’t put down. Even though I hate to admit it; this book pulled on my heartstrings….I may have cried….just a little. I do officially hate Amber and you can’t change my mind about it.
