I had such a strange relationship with this book. I thought it was just an average experience (and I couldn't help but compare it to another book I've read and enjoyed a lot). it took me so long to finish it. I clashed with the writing s lot. but as I finished it, I realized I was glad I pulled through. it does have heart, and I learned to love (or tolerate) the characters and feel anxious as to what could happen next. I was reminded of found family and love and how complex it is.

i hate that i dont know how to feel about this book
i picked this book up two years ago and left it bc of the thing between john and franny. but i thought the story was compelling, and something reminded me of it again so i picked it up.
i trudged through it for two weeks bc i had to finish it, and okay. did i have fun reading it? kind of. did i also think it went on forever sometimes and wished i was reading something else? also yes.
incest aside, i found the family dynamics and settings interesting. it was also... dense.

Did not finish book. Stopped at 12%.
the writing took me out of the story completely, taking into account this is supposed to be historical fiction

I'm sorry but this was just so. bland to me. I was actually quite interested in udayan and I understand he was not the focus but it would have been way more interesting, bc i feel the author can make a good character study. the rest of the cast was again. bland. unlikable and not in a fun way. part of his i feel Abt this may be bc ive read books with similar themes that have done this way better.

i dont even know how to approach this book and or how to give it a neat rounded rating
reading darnielle's narration is like thinking man this person has a fucked-up way of thinking, it must be exhausting and inmediatelly realising that is exactly the way you think
i liked it way better than universal harvester that's for sure, i liked figuring out what happened to the main character and how he interacts with the world a lot, but i honestly felt drained reading it but i dont think its in a bad way !!!!

I was on the brink of tears the whole time reading this so
i love reading plays man, it adds a whole dimention that novels don't have i believe
the translation i read was too spaniard for my taste but it still didnt take away from the heartbreaking interactions, the half-truths and the dialogue that both said everything and left everything unsaid between the characters
