not the strawberry shortcake abuse but I’ll let it slide bc this was one of the best religious trauma representations I’ve read about and he is not even gay

there’s something so refreshing about reading a romance book where it’s just two people getting together - no miscommunication, no live triangle, no third act unnecessary breakup

fun fact the sister relationship does however follow the romance narrative structure and I ate that up

I loved a lot of aspects of the book. For example, the way you can see the treatment towards women and trauma get better with each generation but never good. I also really appreciated the statistics mentioned throughout, they really put everything into perspective and make it even more tragic.
Sadly the book still lands at 4 stars for me.  The main reason being is that even tho fiction is a great piece of information and education BUT this also robs a lot of the personal aspect.

only a man can write this book bc not only were all the women in the book one dimensional with no plot and there to move the plot forward BUT they also wanted to fuck this whiny loser teenage boy that can see further than his dick

I loved the writing style and the way it represented who Christopher really is. For most of the book you could see him go into detail about his interests when he wants a distraction or the change in tone or the way he thinks about certain stuff and why he wrote something etc. Towards the end tho the pacing felt off - he described the trip to London in incredible detail and then skipped over the next few weeks in the matter of pages which is out of character for me.
Hands down tho, the best part of the book was the way the author made you feel for every character. You understand all of them and want them to be okay even if they’ve made mistakes which is not an easy thing to achieve keeping in mind some of the things they did.

thank god it’s over

there were so many things that were in the book just because - the girl dying, the charity, the conversion camp story and more. All of these things were there either for shock factor or to move the story along which I hate. Not every story has to be incredibly complex with miracles and tragedies happening to be impactful.

Speaking of moving, the characters moved on from their feelings so quickly, in the matter of pages, the speed of light has nothing on them.

On top of that the character felt so one dimensional and unreal. And the relationships were crazy bc of course everyone has to be with someone.

I got what they were trying to do and say with Ben’s character, it’s one of the part that I actually enjoyed, but my god had not a single thought or chemistry for that fact with his friend.

The whole book felt like it was just a draft. Someone sat down and wrote to his editor or publisher or whatever what the story and the plot are about and that’s it - no fleshed out characters, believable plot, stories that make sense, character development, no nothing.

The core premise of the book without all the extras added for god knows what is actually good and the book might’ve been good too if it was written by someone else.

sooo fucking cute, a lot of the representation felt like it’s just for checking a box and there was a bit of info dumping but overall it was such a cute comic and now I NEED a tomato dog
