i was genuinely baffled throughout it because i did not understand any of the chess language
but i think the book itself on a whole was very well written and enjoyable, but i didn't really like the way the author wrote female characters (especially young girls). you could definitely tell that it was written by a man due to the language used when describing beth or jolene and the unnecessary scenes he added with them both in the orphanage. but as i said, it was written in the 1980s by a white man in his late 60s so i'm not surprised that it was written in this way if you know what i mean

i've never really been a massive fan of poetry but i absolutely love the work of john cooper clarke
read all the poems in one sitting, in a forest, sitting on a fallen down tree, with my fingers going numb from the cold 😭
would 100% recommend

wow
the plot ?? so detailed and complicated but leigh bardugo makes it sound so easy !! her writing style is so good, and this book made me very easily squeamish (so if you don't like descriptions of gore then this isn't for you !!)
this is the only book where pop culture references were allowed, seeing as the only references made were about the smiths 😭
such a good book, but i spent wayy too much time on it as i was in a massive reading slump :(
