Was it great? No. Did I have a fun time? Little bit. Will I be reading a sequel? Only on the occasion similar to this one- where I’m so unbelievably out of energy to read any sort of edifying book that I have to just read some other ya fantasy that has the same plot of all the other ya fantasy I’ve read prior.

If I make a Hannibal joke would it but only add to his satirical humor or would it be undermining the point
Anyways. I liked this but idk what to rate it for stars yet

Hmmm. A lot of conflicting feelings on this one
I enjoyed this a lot, I loved the horror aspect, welsh mythology, Preston, the Dark Academia™ of it all, the narrative on grooming, and other things grouped within it(that I can’t really grow the courage to say- it’s a sore subject of course, bc why wouldn’t it be- which is why I appreciate Ava Reid’s ability to write about it) and mannn I just really am a sucker for dark academia guys with glasses that probably have autism. Anyways I digress
What I didn’t like about it was Effy’s stereotypes to Preston. I can’t tell if it’s on purpose to highlight the fact that she grew up in a bigoted side of town or if it’s just thrown in there to give them something to argue about, to set a scene. I don’t really know. But I just didn’t like how she treated him. And then she had the temerity to say “why are you being so mean to me” (or something along the lines) this made me laugh because, why wouldn’t he be? You have said nothing but stereotype and insult. And quite frankly I think Preston was overly patient with her and his rude comments were far more warranted.
I also liked the details about Preston almost always having white knuckles like bro has got some rage issues but he stays outwardly calm about it lmao he’s better than me
Don’t have much else to say. I liked it, I still want to read another book of hers that seems interesting, but I’m a little wary

First book of 2024!
This was a missing persons case instead of murder mystery which kind of bummed me. The reveal for the mystery itself was…anti climatic. It was a thing (trying to stay vague to avoid spoiling) I had completely forgotten about bc it was boring. I liked the first book better.
Also not a huge fan of when characters in mystery books get too wrapped up in solving that they forget about their relationships/friendships
I read the preceding book of this series about 3 years ago, so some of the details in this one had me a little confused bc I didn’t exactly remember it.
I loved Ravi in the first one I wish he got more time in this
Pip is kind of going insane! I keep seeing people say that the third book gets dark and Pip goes off the rails. We’ll see
Wish some characters had more depth, but at the end of the day it is a YA book with pop culture references, so I’m not expecting it to be some all time classic. Not great. But fun. I can always count on a YA book to get me out of a reading slump. I will be reading the next. Sometime. Eventually. Soon. Whenever that is.

Eeugghhh. Great idea. Mediocre execution. Magic typewriters sound so cool in theory. I wish this book expanded on the lore of that more since it is you know, kind of it’s whole thing. I did like their dynamic until SPOILER ALERT they get married?? I mean not officially but still. The span of this story is like a few months right? Few weeks? Idk. Marriage is too fast. And then once they confessed their love the banter stopped. I hate when that happens w these types of tropes! It also made me think this was gonna talk more about the whole gods thing and that they would actually make an appearance, but they don’t.
I think a fan fiction of the Iris and Roman using their damn typewriters would be more fleshed out storyline and character arcs then the book itself
Really likable characters tho!
Read this in one sitting it’s 4:30 am so towards the end of this I was kind of rushing through just to finish it. I started to become bored (but also tired so that may be a big component)
Great premise. Not fully fleshed out.

Did this thing where I read the first book to pop up on my Instagram reels and this was it
This book spends 283 pages of “I hate those tropes in books where this happens!” And that trope happens
Rolled my eyes a lot. Almost deleted it several times. But I had to persevere and stick to my Instagram reel plan. Do I regret it? Little bit. But it mentioned Frank Ocean so that counts for something
