I don't normally read YA but it was gifted to me. I loved the main character from first chapter. Nestor's story was heartwarming. I loved the tales and the inspirations and how she connected the kids to each other. The animal character were my favorite.

This book was informative, thought provoking and challenges how society has affected so many people all over the world. It pushes you to examine some take so for granted...your address. As someone who lives abroad and does not have a "permanent address" I have felt the effects of this time and again. I have privilege but for many this affects their every day life.

This book is the perfect blend of history, a great main character and fantastic storytelling. They connect the history and the characters as well as the tough topics on race and racism with a strong female who I would have loved to have known in real life. Belle was an amazing historical figure and the authors give her story life and hope even in the dark moments of our history.

I LOVED the writing in this book. It was long and took me a while because it moved slowly but the writing is beautiful. I could feel the mud between my toes and hear the birds above.
