challenging dark emotional sad

It's dark romance. There are a lot of heavy themes. If you've read any of H.D. Carlton's novels, they do dark romance well.

It has been so long since I've read anything related to The Hunger Games. I haven't read BSS yet so I went into this without that knowledge. I really enjoyed this book for the most part. I think there were some spots that dragged on and felt a little flat. I did enjoy learning about Haymitch's story and how he came to be the man he was in The Hunger Games series.

Listen, this book is dark. It's high fantasy that deals with some serious topics. This was a re-read for me and it is still my favourite series ever. The series continues and it gets so intense. If you are looking for a light fantasy read, steer clear. If you are comfortable with dark and uncomfortable themes then I say read away!

This one took me awhile. It wasn't my favourite but I did enjoy it. The banter and the chaos keep me entertained and also thinking. I think Carl is decidedly underappreciated by the folks in the book because he appears to just be an explosive/crazy idea guy. He wants to help everyone he can, but he can't always do that.
ALSO... SPOILER..

HEKLA IS DEAD AND I LAUGHED SO HARD BECAUSE KATIA DID IT. She clearly meant to take out the other one (I can't remember her name) but that was WILD and I loved it. I KNEW Hekla was a terrible person. Leaving all those women with very little in the way of knowledge or experience.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is quite different than Grady Hendrix's previous novels. It made me feel so many emotions for these young girls in the 70s who had to hide their "indiscretions" by being shipped off to homes for "loose girls".
There were a few parts that slowed down and I found I was getting bored. And the flip flopping of the FMC kept annoying me. But I also understand that these characters are young girls, going through such traumatic situations with no knowledge of their conditions.
Truly a wild book that makes you think about what young girls may have experienced before there were options and education.

Thank you Net Galley for the ARC. My opinions are my own.
