This was my intro to the Kamala Khan/Ms Marvel series! It's been years since I read any superhero comics so the pacing and storytelling style took a while to get used to. I would have utterly loved to have something like this in the shelves when I was younger! This was great for some much-needed light reading - some scenes really stood out and I adore how expressive the portraiture is in the artwork. I'm looking forward to checking more out.

I had trouble with this as the first half of the story just felt hopeless, which was difficult to sit with even when the writing and characters were so vibrant. The second half of the book shifts with some thriller-like suspense where we get to see the sombrely playful love between Leila's five friends in action. It was at this point that it became clear to me how this book was a tribute to grief - for the shadows of Istanbul, for love and longing that finds ways to live on beyond death.

I found the beginning of the book quite dull with dialogue and character dynamics that fell flat. Once Sidi, the main character's grandfather finally entered the story, the book thankfully picked up its pace and I could enjoy the light-hearted beauty of the prose, the way each scene was a love note to Oman, and the sweet exchanges between Aref and Sidi. I don't know if I would've bothered with this book if I was a kid, but my nostalgic adult self enjoyed it.
