I'm not quite sure what happened, but the author lost me 350 pages into the book. I was really enjoying the buildup and was feeling the characters, and then suddenly there was a hundred-year jump forward in time and it felt like I was reading a brand new book that only alluded to the previous section. I gave this new section a full hundred pages to come back around, but eventually just lost interest. I'm giving it 3 stars because I really did enjoy the first part, but I think the second section was added without sufficient transition.

One of my all-time favorite books. I read it the first time when I was about 14, which was huge for me back then because although I liked to read, I was all about ADHD and sitting through a 700-page book was not in my sphere of experience. But it just enthralled me. Even the wacky parts in the middle that had almost nothing to do with the story kept me reading. I've read it probably a dozen times since, and I always seem to get something new out of it.

Loved it.
The last 200 pages kept me up till 4:15 am, and it was worth every second. While some of the characterization was a touch thin, I think it was made up for by some really well thought out futurist satire of the same political and social issues humans are facing today. While it was set in the distant future, the characters and situations were wholly human and relatable.

I loved the book, but unfortunately not to the same extent I've always counted on from Stephen King. Don't get me wrong: it was imaginative and thrilling, kept me turning pages. Just not as unforgettable as some other fictional worlds he has created.

Ok, two things: I started reading this book wanting to like it but assuming I wouldn't. Maybe I'm just an immature American man, but it was too slow and boring for me. Second,I need to be fair and say I only read the prologue, which usually isn't very fair. But the thing is, having already read the summary blurbs and a few of the most positive reviews on Goodreads, I realized that the prologue told the entire story in microcosm. With a few additional sentences to properly introduce and conclude out, it could have been a passable, if uninspired, short story. So why spend hours reading an additional 400+ pages just to arrive at the same conclusion?

Fantastic book. Highly believable, tightly plotted, deep characterization, and Flynn writes the way I always wished I could. Every sensory detail is just perfect.

I am not a fast reader, and I went into Divergent with doubts. But I absolutely devoured this book! It was exciting and poignant, with a thoroughly plausible backstory that lends credibility to the more fantastic elements... all in all just a really fantastic book. looking forward to reading the sequels.
