Cleopatra and Frankenstein by Coco Mellors

the characters are just so cliche and the age gap is very uncomfortable. it’s legal but weird considering she’s in her early 20s and he’s in his mid 40s. their first real moment of chemistry takes place after he reveals his not just old fashioned, but misogynistic mindset which rubbed me the wrong way. what made me stop is the uncomfortable way the author seemed to romanticize cleo losing her virginity at 14 and paralleling it with the next sentence about her adult, sexual relationship with frank.

The characters are just so cliche and it feels so distant from reality for me. After reading in the synopsis, I thought we’d spend more time getting to know our main character than her time at parties and the side characters. I thought it would lead us into the literary world not into some pretentious white men side plots. Maybe it does get better but it’s not good enough for me to wait and find out
