The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

I… did not enjoy this book. Like, it was fine. And I’m sure that as an MG book it’s great, but it just was too young for me. I have read other MG and didn’t have this same problem. Maybe it was lazy writing, maybe it was being a new writer (idk anything about Rick Riordan, if this was his debut or not), but there were just too many times that Percy and his crew sort of oops-ed their way out of trouble, things were explained in a very offhand way and way after the fact, with no real reasoning behind it. I think if I was a middle grade kid reading this it probably would have been great, because reading at that age, you’re not going to pick up on these things.

But, as I said, I’ve read other MG books that didn’t have these same problems. Maybe the rest of the series gets better? Idk, I think I’ll be stopping here.

This book would probably be really good for the right person, but that person just isn’t me right now.

This was super nerdy and I really enjoyed it!

An enemies to lovers with a backdrop of a GamerGate-esque situation for one of the MCs.

I appreciated that as the story progressed, Cat came to realize that she didn’t need to pretend like she was in a video game, trying to figure out the best response to others based on a sort of IRL gameplay mindset.  Though it was entertaining at times.  And that through her being herself she was able to see Andi as themself and not see them as too much.

I also liked the discussions of romance plots in video games and the potential misogyny around them.  Ie: women only play video games with romance story lines; no, women play those games because they are usually the only ones with female characters that you can play as.  I loved that Cat and Andi were creating this super queer video game, with the option for romance, and that they were both so committed to their vision that they fought for it, at the risk of their jobs.

Definitely recommend if you’re a gamer, a gaymer, or just like watching two badass folks take down the white cisheteropatriarchy.
