My first official DNF! Yay?
Mark this down as another reason I've started to seriously side-eye certain Goodreads ratings. It took me two weeks to reach this point in the book because I honestly kept forgetting I was reading it. To be fair, this is my first foray into contemporary romance. But if this book is indicative of the rest of the genre, it's safe to say CR isn't my cup of tea.
I've never rolled my eyes so much at a book, and I don't wanna waste my time itemizing everything I loathed about this, but I'll jot down a few quick thoughts about my reading experience.
-There's so much emphasis on appearance/clothing/physical lust and very little of anything else. According to this book, romantic attraction is based solely on your looks rather than anything of substance.
-If I had to hear about how short Lucy is ONE MORE TIME, I stg. Omg, she's so tiny! She's basically an elf! She can fit in your pocket! She's just so unbelievably smol!!! I basically decided I was gonna make this a DNF when I'd reached the 30 minute mark in the audiobook and her height had already been mentioned three times. Being short is not a personality trait, Sally Thorne. Please, I beg you, find some actual attributes to ascribe to your characters!
-Joshua and Lucy should have been fired like 50 times by now. I know romance isn't supposed to be realistic bla bla bla but they are laughably unprofessional.
-Also, why do they hate each other again? Lucy smiled at him when they met and Joshua didn't smile back...really? That's what inspired such over-the-top resentment?
-Maybe this should kept me from picking up this book in the first place, but I despise corporate culture. It's probably the least romantic setting I can think of.
-Looootta fatphobia
-And I've heard the "r" word is used at one point? Are we really doing this in 2016, Sally?
-At several points I was confused about who was speaking, an issue I chalked up to the audiobook medium. But I've seen complaints from others who read the physical book and had the same issue, so I think the writing is just kinda bad.
-Okay, here's the big one: Joshua is like one or two steps removed from Christian Grey. Idk why this type of hyper-masculine asshole is so often made the romantic lead, but knowing that Lucy is gonna pick him when Danny is RIGHT THERE makes me wanna hurl.
I made it to the chapter where Joshua (view spoiler) (the bar for these hyper-masculine assholes is on the floor), which reminded me of You've Got Mail, a far superior love story. And that's when I realized I'd rather just watch You've Got Mail.
I have one other modern romance on my TBR (Get a Life, Chloe Brown) and I'll give it my best shot, but if that one doesn't work out I might be calling it quits with this genre.
*Listened to audiobook
