This is definitely not an unbiased review, and it's all from memory since I read the book so long ago and can't find my copy (but I know I have it around somewhere).

I remember this was my favorite book for a very long time. I took riding lessons as a kid and it was always my biggest fear that I would fall and be afraid to get back on. This book combined that fear with the awkwardness and low self-esteem that plagues every preteen girl, and made a wonderful heartwarming story about a girl and a horse who helped each other to heal.

I picked up this book from my middle school library in seventh grade. Periodically they would clean out their shelves, and set a cart out in the hallway with books, free for the taking. I don't know what made me pick up "Flowers of Hiroshima". Perhaps it was the fancy lettering on the spine of the book, or the small flower etched in the cover.

I do know that once I began to read, it was impossible to put the book down again. I had no knowledge of Japanese culture, and I was fascinated by how different things were. The characters were intriguing and solid; they felt like real people caught in the long wake of a tragedy.

It was beautifully written, and remains a favorite of mine to this day.

I checked this book out from the library because it was about horses, but little did I know how much I would learn between those pages. It was a world I had never been a part of, where horses are more than just a ride through the woods or around an arena.

Oh Crumb. I did so love that horse.
