Asymmetry by Lisa Halliday
4.0
I really enjoyed this read. Part 1 was my favorite. I have to say, I had to reread Part 2 because I was pretty confused the first time I read it. I started to understand more about what was going on after re-reading. Part 3 was also slightly confusing but after reading a few analyses of the book I was able to piece everything together. I thought the fact that the book was itself a puzzle, and it’s parts asymmetrical, was a complement to the stories and themes that lie within. Lisa Halliday is a fantastic writer and I highly recommend this read.
The Bastard of Istanbul by Elif Shafak
4.5
This book starts out slow and I struggled a little bit to move through it at first. But once everything that was set in the first group of chapters starts coming together, it gets hard to set the book down.
After I finished reading, I almost wanted to go back to the beginning and re-read the parts I found “slow” because I know what was uncovered towards the end connects to so many things and pieces found in the beginning.
This is an amazing story about two families with tales of history and hurt and ignorance and violence and love and relationships. The way the characters end up being interconnected is a perfect testament to the depth and honesty that lies behind the book.
Elif is a beautiful writer and talented author, I was surprised to learn English isn’t her mother-tongue. Having been to Istanbul, I think she painted the vision and true essence of the amazing and unique and bustling city perfectly.
I recommend this book with all of my heart.

I could not recommend this book more. Unbelievably funny, honest, heartfelt and incredibly well-written. It was easy to relate to the main character even though I have nothing in common with him, besides having traveled to some of the places he goes in the book.
The German chapter is my favorite. I laughed so hard at the “translated” conversation parts.
