man. I really wish this didn't feel like they formatted it in Canva. because the photos are beautiful. I just wanted more insight and background on each look. but my main gripe here is how the text was formatted. each section starts with a block of text and the space and font makes it difficult to read which is just disappointing.
But. all said. a lovely cohesive look into the press tour looks.
okay, genuinely. this book can get a little "trust the process" as you read it. But it never feels meandering or uninteresting. it's not heavy on world building. it makes sense and doesn't have to be cross examined.
I can understand others confusion or dislike of the multiple types of POV and first person/third ect. but it starts off setting this up as a story from historical records so in that context it makes sense and keeps it an engaging read.
All of the characters Have a differnt view point and they're all fascinating and the interplay of relationships feel fresh and interesting.
going to be anxiously awaiting the sequel for once.
The way in which this book simply felt like a chore to complete. I was under no illusions that this book was going to be some sweeping grand action packed thing. I was aware of how bleak it was.
I, however, can not get past the fact that it went on for only 287 pages. because it feels so much longer and it doesn't even need to be this long. the same thing happens 5 different ways. a better version of this book is 100 pages long.
I'm simply glad it's over. because the ending is overwhelming and has no real weight. and means ultimately nothing in the end. and for anyone about to say "you just don't get it", I, unfortunately do. I spent a year with this book. I do.
don't waste your time. and don't get me started on the format
I think my problem, or maybe it's not a problem, but I wanted to like this more then I did. At times Joe Hill is a brilliant writer with this wild and beautiful and messed up idea for his book. but at others it simply doesn't. Deliver. like he doesn't have the experience to do what he set out to do. the ideas here are solid, and he has some good lines but I think at time it just falls short. pair this with Joe hills ability to make questionable choices In his writing regarding certain characters - Lou chief among them, and how his fatness is used as a plot device, and the way in which he writes Bing and expands on Bings thoughts that left a bad taste in my mouth. Do not get me wrong, I knew what I was signing up for here, I read horror a lot but there's a lack of finesse and care to this book that distracts from what he was trying to accomplish here.
