i love reading books from racially diverse authors, and this one is important and needed, while still being easy to read

thoughts while reading

p20: right now i feel i could read a whole book with just annalie’s pov, but i’m sure that’ll change as we read
p32: i originally thought we would pick up with margaret where annalie left off, but i guess we’re going through margaret’s day first
p39: How I Met Your Mother is a slay. i still don’t know how to feel about the finale
p40: sounds like margaret is exactly who annalie and mama need right now
p62: o.m.g.
p67: i think violet is nigerian too but i can’t quite remember
p92: nope, she’s asian
p98: well obviously thom isn’t going to matter after a while, now that daniel is in the picture
p220: this is bloody doomed
p226: if you write a racist slur, then you are one. full stop
p262: 🤢 annalie needs to be much more confident in herself
p295: no don’t go to that party!
p302: i’m not surprised you’re melting if he’s doing the lean 😏 he’s just desperate tho
p356: you go girl

All I know is that wherever his story takes him, I won't be a part of it. It's not my responsibility to make him a better man.

i’ve not read The Count of Monte Cristo yet, so i had no idea what i was in for, and can’t attest as to how this gender-swapped retelling compares to the original.
what i can say is that i thoroughly enjoyed The Betrayal of Eden, and will definitely want to read the sequel. I need to know what happens after that cliffhanger!
i received this book as an eARC from the author, Erin Phillips, but this honest review is completely voluntary.

thoughts while reading

p20: girl? wow that is an elaborate scheme
p26: hmm is this la maison iris?
p27: fallon! i thought you were eden’s friend?
p37: oh no, an alleyway is pretty sus, what does he want?
p38: really? i’m still suspicious, could be lying
p40: wait WAIT. do i recognise m. noirtier’s name? that’s worrying
p112: i had originally suspected that hunter would be eden’s escort (unrealistic i know, he’s too low on the social ladder, but i was conjuring a theoretical reason for hunter’s presence). so to have
gerard as fallon’s escort is almost unbearable, but sadly totally expected
p115: now it’s unbearable
p154: what an offer!
p189: I KNEW IT! how could i forget
the package was book shaped
?
p199: it’ll never happen, myles will find out before you want him to
p201: please don’t tell me eden isn’t on the list at all…
p202: well that’s slightly better
p217: i’m warming a little to vivian, at least she’s being normal to eden
p265: yes! that’s why
p360: i suspected that might be her
p370: ugh i wish storygraph would let me add the digital version, there’s supposedly only 8 more pages but there’s 4 chapters left
p371: i just knew this would happen at some point
p383: the poem
is the map
p384: EXCUSE ME

i forgot how different this book is to read. it’s good though, but despite the awards for “best children’s book”, it’s not a kids book. YA maybe, but not middle grade.
i really enjoyed the part set in
london
, now i’ve been there it’s so cool to read about stuff i’ve experienced firsthand

thoughts while reading

p61: oh no! what a thing to have said, never expecting it to really come true! i hope christopher hasn’t internalised that
p81: hmm that actually kinda makes sense
p92: sherlock holmes is also a sociopath
p96: this is trippy, christopher was 9 in 1992, and i wasn’t even born for another 11 years
p108: 44 in 1998 makes the dad nearly 70 now
p212: the most impressive part of all this is that toby hasn’t gotten lost yet

Prayers of a God Chaser by Tommy Tenney

challenging inspiring medium-paced

4.5

this is so inspiring! with just 12 chapters, you could commit to a chapter a day and finish within a fortnight! each chapter took me only 5–10 minutes to complete, and there’s so much goodness inside

thoughts while reading

p17: how often do we favour the flowery pray-ers in our services? God ain’t looking for grammatically correct prayers (just as well, cause sometimes mine don’t even fully make sense to my own ears). his favourites come from the deepest longings of our heart, a soul cry for things to change, and for more of him. be like the tax collector, not the pharisee (luke 18)

p20: this is so good already that i must read another chapter immediately

p49: let us be ones who seek intimacy with the father, not just miracles, not just his power. we don’t need to see his acts as much as we need to see his face

p61: it really does pay to pray every time. God’s got your back
(🗣️ shadrach, meshach, abednego 🗣️)
(sorry guys, i had to, it’s a bop of a song. 3 imaginary points if you can name it though)

p81: when we answer “send me” to God’s question in isaiah 6, we rarely know the full picture of what we’re signing up for

p89: i never even thought of that before. without God there, ezekiel’s dream would have been a nightmare

“In Acts chapter two, they prayed for ten days. Peter preached for ten minutes and 3,000 were saved. Today, churches pray for ten minutes, preach for ten days, and three get saved.”
Partners in Prayer, John Maxwell
God tells us to pray without ceasing, not preach. It’s prayer that shifts mountains the most efficiently

thoughts while reading

p4: damn girl, you talented
p13: slay, i love fantasy girlie pops with daggers 🗡️
p57: wow that would be clever but that’s also semi-evil. you would have double claim to the throne tho 👑
p90: what a good big cousin
p91: wowww that is so coolio ✨ i wondered what mirrors were
p98: we stan a protective prince charming ⚔️
p105: no no no no! tristan will get angry and punish kent!
p112: holy macaroni, sounds like
liam was the mage responsible for
trom vale!
p119: absolutely no hesitation 🌊
p158: could have sworn tristan told you to stay inside or be escorted. no? my mistake ✋🏻
p160: whelp, the gig might be up soon
p197: wait a damn minute, the mysterious trom vale mage couldn’t have been
tris
right?
p220: what. the. hell.
p221: oooh i have a theory. what if
ria and isa
have harmonic magic?
p224: the exchange between ria and the woman in the library happened on page 96 just fyi
p252: i love ria’s heart to try save even her enemies

oh damn this is intriguing. not as much like AGGGTM as i was hoping, but still excellent

thoughts while reading

p7: i suspect that dottie…actually i don’t know what expect. my theory is changing every moment
p8: omg, truly devious
p89: which fyi is a process that joins metal parts using a low-melting-point metal alloy called solder
p242: that makes so much sense
p285: is it leonard nair holmes or leonard holmes nair? make up your mind people
p287: and one of them is probably truly devious
p384: oh please don’t let it really be one of them.
of the two, david
seems more likely, so it’s probably
ellie
p385: actually the evidence points to
ellie
but *chilling thought alert* i think it’s
pix
p403: ellingham
offed himself
. i don’t have proof, and i can’t find his last riddle, but i’m 80% convinced
p416: that was a random ending
