classic literature.

This book follows once-perfect Nick Andreas, a wealthy, popular, and academically gifted sixteen-year-old, who is issued a restraining order from his ex-girlfriend, Caitlin McCourt.
I did a group project on Breathing Underwater for English class, and I actually enjoyed this book overall.
I like how the story is told in the abuser’s perspective as opposed to the victim’s. The book kept me interested and I really enjoyed Nick’s character progression. The only thing I wish was different were the interactions between Caitlin and Nick. It felt really weird and added practically nothing to the story.
Haylee, one of my group members, liked the way Alex Flinn italicized the journal entries and portrayed his conflict with the people around him. But, she wishes she knew more about what the other characters felt. Jasmine, another one of my group members, liked was how both Nick and Caitlin were able to move on. She also noted on howNick used his father’s mistakes in abusing him as a weapon to use on Caitlin.
This story would be great for teens like me because it spreads awareness of a topic that is not often discussed. It would also be a great read for those in a similar situation. I would rate it a four out of five.
