i can't tell if i should hate this because it's criminally short and thus underdeveloped, or if i should be thankful it's short because it reads like something a high schooler came up with five minutes before 11:59 pm, and at least i didn't have to torture myself longer. the plot is straightforward and easy to understand, which would be great for any other genre, but this is, in fact, supposed to be a thriller, yes? i, and i'm sure anyone with a functioning brain cell, guessed the "twist" within the first 30 pages. this might be the worst gone girl knockoff i've ever read, and it's not because of the knockoff aspect—i usually like around 3/4 of those. no, this had a special, unique level of uninspired juvenility usually only present in my maladaptive shower daydreams. the insipid plot might have been forgivable—this is only the 10,000th thriller with the same plot after all, we can't all be creative—but the writing itself is atrocious. "karen had an oven mitt. karen forgot her oven mitts because she was too busy shooting her husband. karen is a crazy driver. karen crashed the car and now karen doesn't remember anything. oh no, whose gloves are those, karen?" i do not care.

but i did like karen, so there's that. i love conniving women, like go girlboss go! or whatever.

excellent copaganda, in that i will always love psychopathic women. mallory might be one of my favorite female characters ever—and that's just by reading one book. fast-paced, thrilling, and fully fleshed out characters and plot. very plot heavy, without any filler moments. it actually works as a standalone—many of these other cop mystery series rarely do, so that's a plus. of course, i'm going to read the other books anyway, after this excellent piece of literature, so i don't think that matters much.

4.5 stars.
