oh, i completely forgot how deranged this book was. it was an emotional rollercoaster from start to finish. i loved pippa's darker character arc, and ravi was as loveable as always.
and "hey sarge, remember me?" literally killed me. i will always love holly jackson's writing.

this is a quick, fun read if you don't really think about it, but my problem is that i think too much.
i've overhyped all my recent reads and none of them lived up to my expectations, so maybe this is a me thing and has nothing to do with the book, but i digress.
this had so much potential for me, and then it just didn't do it?? this was predictable, in a "i've read this a hundred times before" kind of way, not in a "oh the author left clues you're logically supposed to follow" kind of way. which i suppose would have been fine enough, but the random unresolved tidbits towards the ending were so unserious and completely genrebending—and not in a good way.
the whole ghost thing with susie was so?? and then finding out the dismembered guy was a serial killer who killed cara's family in the end with no followup?? i get that obviously in a thriller there's usually some suspenseful cliffhanger, but this was written in so awkwardly, it just didn't work for me.
this could have been a shining-esque "being in an enclosed space for a long period of time makes you insane and imagine things" kind of thriller, but it went a completely different route where every unhinged thing that cara came up with was, in fact, true. like sure your murder victim actually killed your husband and son a year ago. sure you're talking to the ghost of a dead girl you've never met or heard of. the ghost thing especially annoys me to no end because why?? what purpose did bringing in the paranormal serve? she had two scenes just so in the end we could be like omg, ghosts are real. like what.
again, my problem is that i think too much. it's a fun, low stakes mystery thriller if that's what you're into. i'd actually recommend this if you're just getting into the genre. it's unscary, easy to follow, and quite short, so it makes for a good introduction thriller.
