I honestly had no idea what I was getting into when I picked this one up off my shelf. But BOY am I glad I read it! I really loved it and am still in awe of what I just let into my imagination

I knew virtually nothing about this book, having not even seen the movie, and so I went in completely unaware of what was about to unfold. ⁣⁣

This book is perfection. The slow yet deliberate character development for each of the family members is paramount in making this story heart-breaking and disturbing. You really end up attached to them all—at least I know I did. Jack Torrance is a bruised and beaten man, with countless layers of love and strength within him. And yet, his struggles with alcoholism - and bursts of anger & violence - make his moods unreliable and his dark descent all the more treacherous. He’s the perfect host for the Overlook hotel. It’s tough, often, to feel for a character like Jack, but thanks to King’s writing and emphasis on how and why his characters end up the way they are brings such a sense of humanity to them. Wendy was pretty tough and resilient, not afraid of standing up to her husband and her unwavering love for her family was admirable. And little Danny... what a character! His “shine”/ability to tune in to people’s feelings and thoughts was masterfully executed, making him an empathetic figure in his parents’ lives. He brought a sense of awareness, and fear, to their family unit many times. He also by the end encouraged Wendy’s shine, I think. ⁣⁣

The story in and of itself is haunting and disturbing, to say the least. As Jack’s obsession with his new role as caretaker at the snowy-hilled hotel becomes more extreme, this sense of dread washes over you. The Overlook’s history, and its guests who never quite left, comes to life slowly and precisely when it ought to. There are some truly frightening scenes and chapters, almost all of which for me were toward the end with the family

Let me start by saying that this was fun and easy to binge. Loved the writing style and the overall pace of the story a lot. However, I just found all the characters unlikeable and felt little sympathy for them. Especially Alison. I really struggled with her morality and her arrogance in respect to the affair (with sleaze-bag Patrick).

I found mostly all the characters gross and actually had to put it down a couple of times after it made me feel a little dirty (and not in a fun, sexy way). I’m totally down for thrillers and stories with hot as heck chapters, and even stories that deal with affairs, but there was something about this one that really sat uneasily with me from the start

This was such a fun book! It often takes me a little bit of warming up to get into the right head space for YA novels, so the first 100 or so pages were a little slow going for me. But, once I was in it I was HOOKED. The death of Simon, who ran gossip app About That, appears as an unfortunate allergic reaction, but police quickly zero in on evidence suggesting foul play... I loved this premise and McManus delivered with her stylish execution, and excellently plotted narrative. The other four integral characters were unique and typical finds at each high school, which really draws you in from the get go. ⁣

Bronwyn, Addy, Nate, and Cooper were great. I throughly enjoyed each of their sub-plots and how they developed throughout. I felt a lot of pain for Cooper especially, and was so freakin’ relieved when Addy let her voice be loud and heard at long last. Nate and Bronwyn’s storyline had me invested like you wouldn’t believe
