I’m extremely late to the party with this one, but wow…Beautiful and heartbreaking, with characters so well crafted they felt like they were coming alive through the pages. What a way to start off 2023! 🎇
Evelyn Hugo is, for the first time in her life, detailing everything everyone has wanted to know about her tantalising and scandalous past. She hires a relatively unknown aspiring journalist/writer - Monique - to put her life’s story into a biography, and from there we are introduced one-by-one to the seven husbands and absolutely everything in between.
Something ties them together and this is what I was most intrigued to find out from the get-go and there’s no way I could’ve predicted it at all. What a shock of an ending and how utterly devastating too… my heart was in my throat.
Taylor Jenkins Reid has created such rich, human characters throughout this book that I truly felt I could have been reading a memoir at times. Her gorgeous writing style made it un-put-downable, and the sense of place was so grounded in reality that you feel transported back to old golden Hollywood in all its complicated glory.
This is a love story so layered it makes it incredibly real and raw, and it leaves a real sting for many reasons. My incessant need to know the how and why of everything got me to the end in under 24hrs … I’m so glad I listened to the hype and that I allowed myself to be taken in by the world of Evelyn Hugo.

Abbie has woken up in a hospital bed with no recollection of how she got there. Her husband Tim, founder of his own tech company, is by her side when she comes to. However, something about his version of events doesn’t add up because five years ago Abbie Cullen-Scott was pronounced dead… 👀
This book is a psychological thriller like no other. Truly unique and mind-bending, and fascinating to read. By the end of the first chapter or so, everything you go in assuming about the premise is turned on its head and gets you hooked to figure out what the hell is actually going on.
I don’t want to say any more about the plot, as I went in with no more than the blurb on the back and it was such a wild read. I absolutely devoured this book and didn’t want it to end. The twists are ingeniously plotted, with the use of second person POV playing a huge role in this - the unreliable narrator trope was expertly utilised in this book. The chapters were short and fast-paced, which I love! Keeps you on the edge of your seat right to the end; the whole lead up to the finale of this book, as well as it’s conclusion, left me speechless and audibly gasping.
I really cannot say much more about this one without massive spoilers, but what I will say is - you will be intrigued and left going back and rereading things (I did anyway 😂).
Absolutely loved it and so happy to have found a thriller that breaks the mould of the genre and does so with such adroitness.
Ending the year on a gripping five star read: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
