Man, Steinbeck's writing is so gorgeous. This one is very different from his others in that not much really happens. It's a reflection on the lives of these characters that live in this struggling area of town. Encompassing human loneliness and community at the same time.

I absolutely adored this book from start to finish. I found all of the March sisters so relatable and likeable and real in a way you don't often see characters. You really feel like you're there with them through it and I love it. Love this book.

Usually I don't like it when stories leave things open ended but for this one I do think it makes sense. It doesn't matter if what was happening was related to God or the end of the world or whatever. It wasn't really about that.
This book was way more character driven then I thought it would be.

The writing and descriptions just seemed weird and gross. And not in the horror way just- gross in general. It got to the point where I was uncomfortable every time I read it. I hardly dnf books but I am not going to make myself push through this one

Michael and Tori's relationship is the first time I have ever felt really seen in my relationship with my best friend that isn't really romantic but is beyond just being close friends
up until they kiss at the end of the book wahhh
A lot of the scenes with the two of them I really related to in that way. Queer platonic relationships are not something you see often if at all in fiction so their relationship being so coded as a qpr, even though it isn't said, means a lot.

Oh wow. This one was tough.
the parallels of Candy and his old dog being shot. How he wishes he could have been the one to do it. And Lennie and George- sickening, actually.
I almost wish there had been more time given to the characters but the writing is so concise that's kind of the appeal too. Very good one.

I don't usually read YA but man this book. It's the first time I've ever felt really seen in a book in a few ways. With Benji's transness and ability to be himself and his struggles with faith and the community that was supposed to love him. And with Nick, being openly autistic to his friends but still struggling to unmask around them, this need to be a pillar of strength to those he loves most.
This book was incredible intense and honestly made me anxious to read during some points but I found it captivating.
