A Manual for Cleaning Women by Lucia Berlin

Did not finish book.
Brilliantly written as the stories I read were, I found the pace too slow and the pieces too long. Lots of wading into everyday drudgery, which seems to be precisely the point, but perhaps I could only take in small doses at the time: one day, I closed the book and simply never returned to it, even though I kept meaning to. I'm still holding out hope that, one day, I'll pick it up again and give it the second chance it probably deserves.

Mandatory read as school homework during the summer holidays. I've never done too well with these, and wouldn't have picked a James Joyce book for myself if it had been my choice - not quite my taste.

Mandatory read as school homework during the summer holidays. I've never done too well with these, and have never been too drawn by dystopian novels in general.
