A very fast-paced second in the series. Julian is an interesting character and the mysteries are well constructed

A very promising start to the series.  Nuanced characters and an intriguing setup for the protagonist.

A bit overlong, the languid opening setup could have been shortened, I think. The ulktimate solution was almost guessable even for me
challenging informative medium-paced

Dense, fascinating and written with obvious passion. A bit overlong for my taste, but  well-argued and researched with copious documentation. The overall effect was to made the author's point about Ancient India's impact on the world - then and now, from Angkor Wat to Al-Kwhwarizmi, from chess to clocks and from madrasas to matriculation.

A new venture from Ms Peartree, a longer story and an alternate history mystery. An enjoyable first, although I think it could have been either a bit shorter or had more explicit tension throughout. I''ll be interested to try her next if she returns to this format and genre.

I read this after watching the TV adaptation. I wanted to see how the book felt. The TV show did a good job of capturing the essence of the story and indeed the book could have done with being a bit more tightly edited. That said, there was enough in the writing to make me want to check out book 2.

Overlong and over slow,  this was still an enjoyable outing for Miss Winslow. It could have been tighter and tauter, especially by reducing the amount of unsubtle preaching about racial injustice. Ms Whishaw has done better at blending socio-political issues into her stories than she did here
informative lighthearted medium-paced

Not bad, but the lengthy explanation and defence of descriptivism was a bit "preaching to the converted" for me, and very reflective of the primary target audience being speakers of US English.
