3.5 stars, because Cornelius is best boy.
On one hand, as someone who grew up conveniently unattractive, weird and bullied due to both of these facts, I actually found Foss's insecurities very believable. On the other - the pacing of the book was all over the place. I went from wanting to drop the book because it had been exposition for ten pages straight to devouring the next ten again and again. I don't often say this, but the book could have benefited from being either longer and exploring Sylvester a lot more or the novella the author mentioned in the afterwords.

It has the simplicity I often find myself missing in modern adult fantasy - epic quests, pure friendships, well cemented sides, very little gore and sex. Honestly felt like a breath of fresh air after all the grimdark and romantasy (yes, polar opposites) I've been reading for the past years.
However, it does read dated in other areas, namely the characterization of women and random lore-dumps.
Overall, I see why it's a favorite of so many and I will continue reading at least the remainder of the first trilogy.

Loved absolutely everything about the setting and the writing, sadly the story and the characters failed to hit the spot for me.
